UVB tanning equipment is not a low-risk wellness accessory. The U.S. FDA states that UV radiation from tanning devices presents serious health risks .

In the United States, sunlamp products intended to induce skin tanning are subject to medical-device labeling requirements, special controls and an electronic-product performance standard. Other markets use their own classifications, restrictions and responsible-party requirements.
